    Iran has a long and colourful history of civilisation, including several of the world’s great empires. The splendour of these people can still be seen throughout the country, despite the ravages of time, war, erosion, earthquakes, and plundering.

    The current government is undertaking an ambitious programme of restoration and protection, and most of the sites we visited were partly obscured by scaffolding. A forgivable intrusion, if it preserves these amazing structures.
